A fantastic renovation
It’s not so long ago that kitchens were separate utilitarian rooms, built for the specific purpose of preparation and cooking of food. Devoid of kitchen islands, bar stools or soft furnishing with lighting that was functional rather than funky!
A kitchen for life
Kitchen designers at Handcrafted Kitchens understand that the modern day kitchen has to play host to more than just cooking. Today’s kitchens need to reflect the life we lead. Multitasking is the norm and being in the kitchen is an experience to be shared with friends and family whilst cooking and eating but for so many other activities such as homework, arts and crafts, and listening to multi media. The move towards home working and entertaining at home has given the kitchen even more prominence. With an increasing range of functions to perform and ages to cater for, the kitchen has naturally evolved to grow in size to adapt to the changes of use.
No wonder then if you have purchased an older property, whatever it’s size, the layout won’t quite be right for the way you want to live today.
Take this terraced property in Hale, originally with a traditional layout of a small kitchen, living room and old conservatory outhouse. It had plenty of potential space but the balance wasn’t right for modern day living. It was bought in a run down state so there was a perfect opportunity to reconfigure the space to suit how the young homeowner wanted to work and play. This required a small amount of construction at the rear of the property but the main change of emphasis was to use the space from the separate lounge/dining room to increase the size of the kitchen area thus creating open plan living, dining and cooking all in one space.
A large open plan kitchen diner was created by removing the dining room wall and extending the property at the rear to utilise the exterior to the maximum. The old conservatory outhouse was removed and two new double glazed French windows together with a Velux window installed to improve the natural light into the kitchen and ultimately improve energy efficiency. With careful kitchen design by Handcrafted Kitchens using bespoke handmade shaker kitchen cabinets the open plan kitchen diner is now truly the heart of this home with masses of space for family and friends.
The central hub is the large bespoke kitchen island complete with a Belfast sink. Perfect for breakfast or evening drinks with friends, it is positioned in front of the range cooker so the chef can multitask whilst making dinner. A large wall mounted TV is positioned on the opposite wall to provide entertainment day and night.
In keeping with the age of the house a traditional kitchen mantel has been constructed around the range cooker to conceal the extractor with a display shelf above. A large bifold larder cabinet for food provisions stands architecturally in the airy extension where the old conservatory once stood.
The utility area has been completely concealed in an elegant floor to ceiling classic shaker cabinet with integrated fridge freezer, washer dryer and further food storage.
The French doors lead to a table and chairs on a charming patio, perfect for when the sun shines! An amazing transformation brought to life with careful planning and bespoke handmade furniture.
