If you are looking to update your kitchen in 2021 by having a new kitchen extension or you are looking for an upgrade of your existing kitchen with a bespoke kitchen, Handcrafted Kitchens can help guide you through the process from start to finish. A kitchen island will no doubt be high on your ‘wish list’ but what else is a must for a handmade kitchen in 2021?
Here are a few of our predictions for kitchen trends in 2021.
Kitchen Islands for Dining
Whilst we now commonly use kitchen islands for casual dining, in 2021 we will see the emergence of larger kitchen islands capable of being used for formal dining so that the host can truly integrate cooking and entertaining. The kitchen island in this Luxury Shaker Kitchen in Derbyshire seating 6 people comfortably is a perfect example.
Statement tiles used on the floor or as a splashback will be a favourite in 2021. The key is to match with subtle colourways. The stunning tiles used as a splashback in this classic shaker kitchen by Handcrafted Kitchens are from Claybrook with cabinetry in Farrow and Ball Railings and Cornforth White.
Green cabinetry will be very much on trend in 2021 with brass metallic accents and textured glass to add organic depth with white marble work surfaces to reflect the light. Little Greene have a wonderful Green collection made in collaboration with the National Trust.
Deep blues like Farrow and Ball Hague Blue used in this bespoke handmade kitchen in a cottage in Wilmslow have dominated hand made shaker kitchen cabinets for the last 2 or 3 years but they are still popular particularly teamed with light silver grey and white work surfaces or solid oak wooden worktop.
Dark tones dominate but in 2021 there will also be a growth in muted earth tones and simple free standing cabinets in the kitchen. It’s about paring back, a simple statement of calm tones for a serene living environment. Dulux’s colour of the Year 2021 ‘Brave Ground’ is a perfect example of a new approach to tonal calm or perhaps you prefer ‘Moles Breath’ from Farrow and Ball as featured in our blog on Kitchen design for Health and Wellbeing.
Two Toned Kitchens
Forget perfect match in 2021, two tone can capture a perfect mix! Choose a contrast of dark and light paint or add wooden cabinets in oak or walnut for texture like the Luxury Designer solid walnut and aubergine kitchen designed and installed by Handcrafted Kitchens in Wimbledon.
Achieving a clutter free work surface is only possible with smart storage. A kitchen larder cabinet whether full length or with countertop opening bifold doors will give you the flexibility to declutter work surfaces and allow you to conceal appliances such as microwaves kettles and toasters. Creating a dedicated area for breakfast time also assists a family dynamic on busy mornings to ‘help themselves’.
Dark work surfaces
Dark work surfaces are a key trend for 2021 and look dramatic when set off against lighter furniture such as this bespoke kitchen made by Handcrafted Kitchens in Marple. Often accompanied with 2 tone kitchens, using a mixture of textures such as wood with dark countertops gives a warm homely feel to a kitchen.
Hob Downdraft Extractors
In 2020 many of the big names replicated the lead Bora began by manufacturing downdraft extractors in hobs which remove odours and vapours at source. Particularly important if you are looking to install a hob in an open plan kitchen. What is more, kitchen design is much more flexible using a downdraft extractor. Without the need for head extraction you have no visual barriers into an open plan area. Our prediction is that Bora will grow from strength to strength in 2021 because of the superior extraction mechanism in this stunning downdraft hob.
Hot water taps
The trend in working from home has catapulted the demand for hot water taps over the last few months and whilst the trend for working at home is here to stay, so the demand for hot water taps will continue to grow. At Handcrafted Kitchens we are approved partners with the premium hot water taps Quooker, the only hot water tap on the market to reach 100 degrees, so you will always be able to make a perfect cup of tea whilst at work! And, it’s not just tea and coffee preparation time that is reduced by a Quooker they speed up the process of making anything from poached salmon to wilted spinach, pasta and eggs!
Living room Furnishings in the kitchen
As the kitchen evolves into open plan living, making room for soft furnishings in the kitchen is growing in popularity. In 2020 we have been at home more often than usual so making the kitchen comfortable with soft furnishings has never been more important. And, in 2021 the need for comfort in the kitchen will continue.
With pubs and restaurants being closed we have all been experimenting with new dishes in the kitchen and mixing our own cocktails. We had already seen a growth in home bars in 2020 but we predict a sharp rise in bespoke drinks cabinets in 2021.
Whilst copper has been king for the last 2 -3 years, brass will rise in popularity as a perfect complement for blue, green and grey cabinetry in 2021. Whether it is for door furniture, taps, sinks or accessories brass is the on trend metal for 2021. Take a look at the wonderful selection from Buster and Punch.
Broken plan is for those who prefer to have a little separation from the pots and pans on sight. It is a more zoned approach evolved from open planned living which incorporates using a partition such as a shelf unit to create a division without a solid wall. In 2021 we will see more broken plan kitchens emerging as people embark on kitchen extensions.
The key to ensuring a small kitchens work for you is careful planning and bespoke cabinetry. At Handcrafted Kitchens we make every piece of your kitchen so we can help you maximise the space available and offer options that may not be available elsewhere. If you want the versatility of a kitchen island we can advise on the most appropriate size without restricting movement. A good option may be a peninsula island. And, if you want to include a kitchen larder cabinet, for example, it can be made any size which can give a cottage country kitchen (like this one in Rainow ) real individuality.
We hope you have a good feel for the trends of 2021. Of course you don’t have to be a slave to new trends and at Handcrafted Kitchens we listen and design kitchens exactly how you want them, we don’t just stick to formulas because we know that everyone has an individual way they of using their kitchen.
